I thought this paper was very interesting! I especially enjoyed looking at the charts calculating the Hazard ratio for certain variables, and how they changed depending on the types of weapons that were used to inflict fatalities. I found it particularly interesting that variables such as high temperature and even Ramadan could affect the hazard ratio. I actually read a book called "what terrorists want" recently that was a good background read for this paper. It explored the area of suicide bombing a lot more in depth, of course, but it was a very good read that i would recommend. I can completely understand how certain provinces could be more dangerous, and that the areas bordering Pakistan could affect the hazard ratio. Other variables that I didn't really think about before but that I could understand once they were pointed out were elevation and population density, Overall I really enjoyed reading this paper and I definitely learned a lot!
This research paper was elaborative, as its topic is very interesting; the issues that are being discussed are very important and a solution is in an urgent need, so that peace will prevail in the region of Afghanistan and the rest of the world. It was interesting to see how the hazard ratios have been increased since 2002. It is most likely possible that these numbers are higher over the passing of years, due to the exponentially advancement of technology, the availability of weapons (small arms, IEDs, RPGs) and the non-stop and increasing disappointment of people. Therefore, I believe that further research has to be conducted in order to find how these groups of people (as long as they belong to a developing country) have access to this kind of improved technology and weapons. In my opinion –coming from a nation that has a long history of wars and civil wars- the reasons of civil wars that were discussed in this paper are well know from the past. As many politicians say, study of history is important in order to avoid the same mistakes. In other words, history has shown that terrain, geographic position and weather conditions have always been in favor of the population that “owns” and has lived in a particular region for many years. It was interesting though to see the results of the research; the tables and the charts that prove all the actions of the offenders and the defenders during war. I was happy to see that this paper researched the effects of religion; as it is the most important source of fanaticism that results in anger and war from these populations. I was not surprised to see increased numbers of attacks during Ramadan, as from my experience in Nigeria I have seen the same actions with the difference though that Muslims following the Jihad killed Christians and exploded churches. Overall, I would suggest that further research has to been done in order to have actual evidence and results so that the civil wars can be stopped. We should not forget that we are talking and researching humans, hence I believe that anthropological research has to be conducted that one may study behaviors, tradition and culture of people in particular region. In this way, people would not be judged based on US standards but according to their culture. Finally bias would be avoided, people would be respected and most importantly efficient solutions would be found.
I thought the paper was very interesting to read and carefully researched and well written. The graphs justify what is being written. I also found it interesting how high temperature affected the hazard ratio. The chart about fatal attacks by tactic and province was also interesting to read because it displays what is being used in each country that is making civilians or people die or how they are killed. I learned a lot from reading this article and found it very interesting and encourage others to read it to find out more about testing of fatal insurgents.
This was an truly informative study it sheds light on the fact that idealogy and not simply evil is the justification for these unprovoked attacks. Attacks upon persons, churches, and religions. The world must be made aware of these tactics ever unconventional and ever more imaginative in the Jihad against what is truely globalization we on both sides, truly must understand that what is fear and panic to the West and especially the us is a war against everything they hold to be sacred, as well as the assimilation of muslim culture.on the part of the Terrorist. However, they can't or won't respect that the fact that times tare changing as globalization and the meshing of cultures, traditions, races, and the advancement of all technologies is making the world a more unified place. These are things that terrorists fear. To practice Prejudice on a global scale has blinded both the terrorists and there enemies from reaching out. We have have yet to see things from each others prospectives maybe someday we will. Thus slowing even ending terror activity around the world.
I thought that this paper was very informative. Having many friends who have been deployed there, this paper factually shows what they have been saying, it’s safer to patrol on Islamic holidays and the providences are more dangerous then the capital. I am forwarding this article to them overseas. I know their response will be "tell me something I didn't already know". joe puleo ps2810
